Report on the Activities of 2004
ONG Terre Vivante
Statement from the Executive Secretary
The year 2004 was marked by the implementation of several activities in disadvantaged rural and urban zones in Mauritania. Public authorities and development partners are making important efforts in the field of social and economic development.
Nevertheless, the situation remains troubling: statistics tell us that a full 50,5% of the population lives below the poverty line; 80.9% of the population has no access to drinkable water; the illiteracy rate stands at 42%.
Therefore, we believe that all actors must mobilize to improve the population's living conditions.
Living Earth's intervention is distinguished by its mobilizing effort that manifests itself in the establishment of a local development process. This objective is followed by a double action: the reinforcement of communities' and local associations' capacities and realization of socio-economic projects benefiting the most underprivileged classes.
The NGO's activities have found support and encouragement at both the national and international levels. The most recent example of this support was the NGO's admission to the Economic and Social Counsel of the United Nations.
We express our sincere gratitude to all those who support Living Earth in its mission to fight against poverty.
